CELEBRATING WORLD DOWN SYNDROME DAY
(Mar. 21, 2024) In the United States, approximately 350,000 individuals live with Down syndrome, with around 1,500 residing in the Mid-South. Down syndrome is a genetic condition that occurs in one in every 691 live births worldwide. It affects people of all ages, races and economic levels and is the most frequently occurring chromosomal disorder.
In recognition of World Down Syndrome Day on March 21, we’re spotlighting the Down Syndrome Association of Memphis & The Mid-South, a local nonprofit dedicated to supporting and empowering individuals with Down syndrome and their families. It offers comprehensive support for individuals with Down syndrome and their families, including information services, educational meetings, social events, networking opportunities, advocacy, and family support.
We recently granted the agency a $15,000 grant to enhance its website. By supporting the Down Syndrome Association, you can contribute to building a more inclusive society where everyone, regardless of ability, is valued and supported.
ONE EXTRA DAY
(Feb. 29, 2024) With 2024 being a leap year, we find ourselves with an additional day—an opportunity to check in on our philanthropic goals. How are you giving your time, talent, and treasure? Does that reflect your values and your capacity? Perhaps you have dedicated extensive hours to service recently and could use a moment to recharge before embarking on a year of sustained impact. Alternatively, with the holiday season behind us, improved financial circumstances might offer an opportunity to enhance support for your dearest causes.
Whatever the scenario, as February draws to a close, take stock of your goals, whether they involve volunteering, financial contributions, or deepening your understanding of critical issues. This extra day serves as a timely reminder to rest, reflect on your progress, and renew your dedication to making a meaningful impact. We encourage you to make the most of this bonus day, transforming your philanthropic intentions into actions that resonate throughout the year and beyond.
SPOTLIGHTING FOSTER VILLAGE MEMPHIS
(May 2, 2024) As May marks Foster Care Month, we spotlight Foster Village Memphis, a vital resource for caregivers and vulnerable children. Across the U.S. there are over 400,000 children in foster care, including 1,200 in Shelby County.
When a child is placed with a family, they often arrive with just the clothes on their back. Foster Village Memphis provides essentials like clothing, beds, and infant gear at no cost, fostering community through events connecting families. This support is crucial as half of licensed foster homes quit after one placement, worsening instability for youth as exhausted, isolated parents cite burnout.
Recently awarded a Nonprofit Capacity Building grant by the Community Foundation, Foster Village Memphis aims to enhance its services through comprehensive staff and board training, robust management systems, and essential technology resources, fortifying its capabilities to serve vulnerable children and families.
